Ahhhhh… finally, a snow day! We have been excited about the (minuscule) snow falls that we have gotten over the past few months, but while beautiful to look at, the inch or two certainly wasn’t going to give our children the gift they were actually looking for: their very first snow day. Finally, last night at 9 pm, we received the magic text announcing that school was cancelled for the following day. Time to celebrate with the perfect snow day cocktail: the Mingle!
The Mingle is part of the flip family of cocktails, which Death & Co. describe in their Cocktail Codex as follows:
A Flip’s characteristic flavor arises from the combination of a core spirit or fortified wine and a rich ingredient. A Flip is balanced by its rich ingredients, such as eggs, dairy, coconut milk, or dense liqueurs and syrups. (Cocktail Codex, p. 243)
While a classic Flip cocktail consists of booze, sugar, and a whole egg (better than it sounds!), the full family of flip cocktails can use many different ingredients to create that characteristic richness in the flavoring. The Mingle uses heavy cream alongside amaretto, coconut rum, and blended scotch. Nick and I were inspired to make this cocktail after a visit to the Rooftop Bar at the St. Regis in Doha, which had a similar concoction on the menu.
The Mingle is a lovely white frothy cocktail. We’ve used it previously for the “white” drink of our red, white, and blue theme for July 4th — but it also works perfectly for a snow day celebration! So when the weather outside is frightful, stay inside and shake up the Mingle!
Ingredients
1 oz heavy cream
1 oz amaretto
1 oz coconut rum
1/2 oz blended scotch (we love Monkey Shoulder)
Method
Shake all ingredients with ice in a shaker. Strain into a martini or coupe glass to serve up. Cheers to a snow day!
